Safety Month 2023 - Week 1

October is SafeWork Australia's Safety Month. We're going to be bringing you a different health and safety focus area each week, to bring Safety into the forefront of our minds.

Week 1 is all about working together to manage risks at work.

Did you know, without work-related injuries and illnesses, the Australian economy would be $28.6 billion larger each year? (Source)

This shows that WHS is critical to our prosperity. Workplaces that are safe and free of injury and illness provide benefits for all of us. One of the fundamental pillars of safety in the workplace is Risk Management. Risk Management involves thinking about what could happen if someone is exposed to a hazard, and how likely it is to happen, then using control measures to eliminate (or if not possible) minimise risks in the workplace. This can prevent injuries and illnesses, improve the health, wellbeing and capacity of workers, and improve the quality and productivity of work. Not to mention under Australia's WHS laws, persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) such as employers, have a primary duty for managing work health and safety risks.

Here are some helpful resources for risk assessment and risks controls that you can implement in your workplace today:
